excerpt from "The Minority"
Christianity is a minority movement – it always has been – it is now – and may always be… true Christianity is not simply the organized church – it is smaller than that. Christians are the men and women who are convinced that if there is not a sacrificial dedication of mind and heart and hand to evangelism and service to God our way of life is doomed. In the 13th Chapter of Matthew read what Jesus said to the “so-called” righteous minority of his day – verse after verse he charges – hypocrites- why? They were only going through the motions…and even they didn’t believe in what they were doing. They had all the words and the laws and made sure they were enforced to keep order but they had lost the root of the matter.
God doesn’t use perfect people – he doesn’t have any – that’s not what righteous means – God uses concerned people. For people who care – for people who care enough – not just to make a living but to save a life…their own included. There is nothing quite as useless as the self-styled “good” people who sit like Lot at the gate of the city – anxious and concerned – but whose goodness simply means not robbing others. It is the activity of the leaven in the dough that saves the community. It’s the dissemination of faith and humility and steadfast commitment to justice and freedom of thought that is shared by the minority that makes the majority change the course of history. These are God’s people – his minority who change the world. Sodom was filled with them, Siloam too – as is our community. Good people but maybe not good enough. Concerned people but not concerned enough.
Accidents happen, disasters happen, humans decide to do violent acts against other human beings… communities, countries and yes, even churches, all have times when the minority needs to put things into focus on God. God gives us many chances in life to be “one of the 10” – have you used your chance yet? If so – great…if not? Why not? Each moment we have is a gift from God and God expects us to live fully and to use it to God’s glory. Be part of God’s minority.
